René Heyvaert
Solo exhibition of René Heyvaert
31 08 - 28 09 2025
René Heyvaert (1929-1984) was a Belgian visual artist and architect known for his minimalist and conceptual approach to art. Heyvaert initially trained and worked as an architect, a discipline that deeply influenced his artistic practice. His transition to visual art in the 1960s marked a shift toward a more personal and poetic exploration of form, material and space.
Heyvaert’s work is characterized by its simplicity, precision, and use of everyday materials such as envelopes, cardboard, tape and twigs. He often created small-scale, intimate pieces that blurred the boundaries between drawing, sculpture and object. His art reflects a quiet, contemplative sensibility, often infused with subtle humor and existential reflection.
Despite his relatively short career - he passed away in 1984 in Scheldewindeke, Belgium - Heyvaert left a lasting impact on the Belgian art scene. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including retrospectives at institutions such as S.M.A.K. in Ghent and Museum M in Leuven.
In recent years, his legacy has been revisited and celebrated through renewed interest in his unique artistic voice.
The gallery is open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 14 until 18 o'clock.
The exhibition runs from 31 08 until 28 09 2025.
