Hektor, Lanzarote

‘Hektor, Lanzarote’, is the new solo show of Bert De Geyter with Settantotto Art Gallery, which is being held in the former Jan Colle Gallery.

In October 2024, Bert spent a month in Lanzarote as an artist in residence at Hektor. A special place on this breathtaking island.

He didn't have a concrete plan, but he did have the idea of discovering this new place in the slowest way possible: on foot. The long walks, observations, sketches and notes he made gradually formed the basis for new work. In Lanzarote itself, he already created three series on paper.

Back in his studio in Ghent, it became clear that the “island of eternal spring” had gotten under his skin and the impressions were really starting to sink in. This resulted in several new series and individual works. They form the heart of this solo exhibition, which is named after the place of residence. Hektor, Lanzarote.

'This place rejects any scale but the measure of itself. Vast in every detail, it is tinily immense.'

“Bert De Geyter translates his impressions of Lanzarote's remarkable vegetation, volcanic landscape and spectacular skies into a varied body of work. The exhibition feels like an ode to the island by an artist who continues to explore his own medium while keeping it very limited: charcoal, black paint and oil stick on rough Flemish linen or paper.”
